Mama’s Table

The objects in this display are largely from the Bawa family collection and are an assemblage comprising different European origins. This kind of collection was typical among wealthy families across the globe.

The dining table, fondly referred to as “Mama’s table” by Bawa, is a collapsible and expandable piece of furniture which can be configured as needed. Apart from the ceramic plates and silverware, these objects were rarely used by Geoffrey Bawa. The aesthetic features and fine craftsmanship of these objects was no doubt keenly appreciated by Bawa, who designed everything from the furniture to the silverware to the uniforms in many of his hotel projects; in part due to the unavailability of ready-made options in the country during the latter half of the 20th century, but also in keeping with the Modernist ideals of reconciling art with technology.
