This brass and cane chair is an adaptation of the classic Thonet Era Armchair by Michael Thonet, which revolutionized mass-production of furniture through his father August Thonet’s development of bentwood structures. Bawa used a cane adaptation at the Serendib Hotel bar in Bentota and adapted in brass for the Triton Hotel in Ahungalle; six chairs were also used at the dining table at the Sunethra Bandaranaike house, which Bawa designed in the early 1980s.
