22nd Annual Geoffrey Bawa Memorial Lecture

Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena

Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena are founding partners at Escher GuneWardena Architecture, established in 1995.  The firm’s award-winning work ranges from residential to commercial and institutional projects.  Residential work includes numerous custom homes and housing in the Los Angeles region.  Institutional work includes collaborations with artists, art galleries, and exhibition design projects internationally. Preservation-related projects encompass works by John Lautner, the Eameses, Rudolf Schindler, Richard Neutra and Paul R. Williams, including the current restoration of Neutra’s 1929 Lovell Health House in Los Angeles.  They were exhibition designers and curatorial advisors for The Jeweled Isle: Art from Sri Lanka, the 2018 exhibition which presented 240 works spanning two millennia of Sri Lankan history at LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.  Other notable work for the Sri Lankan community in California includes a 100-acre meditation center campus in foothills of the San Gabriel mountains.

They have been guest professors at Cal Poly Pomona, University of Oregon, University of Southern California (Escher) and EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne. In 2017 they led a study trip focusing on the work of Geoffrey Bawa for the ETH, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, and will be returning to Sri Lanka in December to lead a tour for the US-based Society of Architectural Historians.  Their monograph, Clocks and Clouds: The Architecture of Escher GuneWardena, was published in 2017.
